While AI, including generative AI, has been around for years, the release of ChatGPT in November 2022 was almost like an alien landing. In mere weeks, it made the incredible capabilities of the most recent models suddenly available to more than 100 million people.1 The intense optimism and concerns inspired by the sudden appearance of this powerful generative AI jump-started conversations not only about the uses of AI but also about how to govern it
