Teachers break new ground with innovations

NEW DELHI: From using the game of stapoo and using spaghetti sticks and marshmallows to form 3D shapes to teaching about different angles through yoga postures, innovation marks the classroom approach of these three teachers. They will represent Delhi at the national level Vidya Amrit Mahotsav, a festival of innovative pedagogy.
Shilpa Raghuvanshi Chauhan, postgraduate biology teacher at Salwan Public School, Rajinder Nagar, uses stapoo, akin to hopscotch, to help children learn about the structure and functioning of the heart. The 39-year-old Chauhan has been a teacher now for a decade after gaining a PhD degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University. She said, "The objective of the project was to help students enjoy learning and retaining information about long biological processes through affordable games. Games can be easily designed so that students from all sections of society can benefit. When they are learning through stapoo, they are in groups and jointly learn the lessons, which they can revise easily too. One good thing about this is that even students who are introverted in classrooms have been coming forward to play and learn."
